We had family member”s watch our German shepherd while my parents house got flooded and he lost most of his training. This included him starting to aggressively bark at people and not being able to be calm. Shayla had done more than an excellent job in being able to train our dog figgy we can now take him on walks without worrying about him barking or being aggressive. Our dog figgy stated a bit of separation anxiety and even though my husband and I had kennel trained since he was puppy he just wasn’t able to be left home alone. Now he knows specific commands and is able to be in a kennel by himself. I’m so thankful for Shayla because I don’t know what we would have done without her.

i’ve had the best experience with Canine Community. I took my dog Ellie to Shayla and she did two week training session and I’ve also boarded her there. I would highly recommend this business to anyone needing help with training, and boarding. She treats my dog Ellie the way I treat her with lots of love and care.

Thank you for taking such great care of my baby during her 6 week board and train. We sent our Stella to Shayla when we found out we were going to be having our first little one and knew that Stella could be territorial. Our son just turned 1 and they are still best friends with no problems! We couldn’t be more happy with canine community center.

Shayla knows what she is doing! She has helped me and my dogs so much! I did do the 2 week board and train with one of mine that is particularly stubborn and thinks for herself as she is half German Shepherd and half Great Pyrenees! I do I have a working line 9 week old puppy and plan on sending him as soon as he’s old enough! I promise you she’s the best trainer in Spokane!

If you want a calm, well balanced, well behaved dog, Shayla is the one to go with. She took my BIG GSD 6 months old from super active out of control craziness to a nice calm and controlled dog with confidence. I can now take him in stores with no issues. Can go to the park “off leash” with confidence. You will not be disappointed ‼️

We sent our dog for training with Shayla for two weeks. She updated us along the way and sent videos. Our 2 1/2 year old Sammy was very anxious and struggled with the door bell, aggressive behavior and barking. Shayla found out what our bell sounded like and played it at her home for hours to desensitize his fear. She taught him several commands and even worked on “place” for him to go when he needs to calm down or if someone is coming to the door. She spent 3 sessions with my husband and I to show us what he was learning and what to do. Since he has been home he has continued to show what he learned with Shayla. He sits, lies down and goes to his place on command. Shayla’s kindness, expertise and consistency when training our dog was more than we even expected. I could tell when she returned him that they had created a wonderful bond and we will be sending him for boarding in the future. I would highly recommend her for dog training. She is simply the best!

My baby girl Nellie is a whole different, better version of herself! Shayla took her in for the two week Board N Train as I recently had back surgery and she did amazing things! I have a husky chow mix and she is just a hyper, diligent, alpha little female and Shayla turned her into the most caring, well behaved girl I’ve ever met! The commands are simple and so easy to reinforce at home. I am so pleased with all Nellie has learned. My 7 year old is confident to take her out to potty now, he isn’t scared she will pull him down the stairs and loves practicing her commands with her. Highly recommend Shayla, she truly is a Godsend! Forever thankful.

Canine Community Center did a wonderful job training our reactive dog Trigger. He came with that name and it described him perfectly but after training with Shayla I’m able to take him out walking in our busy neighborhood.

From Bracing for Trouble to Breathing Easy

Aggression shows up in many ways. These are the changes Spokane owners come to us for most often.

Life right now

  • Lunging and snapping at dogs on walks
  • Your dog is shut away whenever guests visit
  • Growling over food, toys or the couch
  • Charging the door, the fence or the window
  • Strangers and kids make you nervous
  • A bite, and the fear it will happen again
  • Everyone at home walks on eggshells

Life after training

  • Calm walks past other dogs
  • Guests come in while your dog relaxes
  • Meals and toys without the tension
  • A dog who settles on place at the door
  • A dog who stays calm around people
  • A safer dog and the skills to stay in control
  • A relaxed home for the whole family

Every Kind of Aggression Has a Reason

Before we train anything, Shayla figures out what’s driving the behavior, because the plan for a dog who guards a bone looks nothing like the plan for a dog who charges the front door.

Dog-to-dog aggression

Lunging at every dog on the trail, scuffles at the park, or tension between dogs in the same home. We build impulse control, a solid leave it and calm behavior around other dogs at a distance your dog can handle, then shrink that distance over time.

Aggression toward people

Growling at strangers, nipping at visitors or snapping at family members. We help your dog learn that people coming close is not a threat, and we give you clear tools to manage greetings safely.

Resource guarding

Freezing over the food bowl, stealing and guarding socks, or snapping when someone walks past the couch. Guarding is common, and with the right structure and some trade-up skills it often improves a great deal.

Territorial behavior

Charging the window, the fence or the front door, or guarding the yard. We teach your dog that visitors and passersby aren’t a threat, build a calm place command for the front door and give you a plan for guests, deliveries and new family members, including a baby on the way.

Dogs with a bite history

If your dog has bitten, you still have options. Shayla works with dogs that have a bite history, puts safety first and tells you honestly what’s realistic for your dog and your household.

Fear-based aggression

Many dogs labeled aggressive are scared dogs who learned that barking and snapping make scary things back off. We build confidence and give your dog better choices, so it no longer feels it has to defend itself.

Aggressive Dog Training That Lasts

Behavior modification means changing how your dog feels about a trigger and what it chooses to do next, one step at a time. Shayla’s method blends praise, clear structure and accountability, tailored to the dog in front of her. Good choices pay off. Pushy or dangerous choices meet calm, consistent boundaries.

Training happens where the problems happen. Once your dog has the basics, Shayla takes those skills to parks, stores and busier places around Spokane, so your dog learns to stay calm with real distractions, not only in a quiet room.

Safety comes first the whole way. When a muzzle makes training safer for everyone, we teach your dog to wear it calmly, so it becomes a normal piece of gear. It lets your dog practice new skills while everyone stays safe.

  • Obedience foundations: place, leave it and loose-leash walking
  • Gradual, calm exposure to triggers at a distance your dog can handle
  • Muzzle comfort when safety calls for it
  • Clear rules at home that lower stress for everyone

Why Aggression Is Shayla’s Specialty

The dog who has already bitten, the dog who can’t share a room with another dog, the dog who guards the couch from the whole family: those are exactly the dogs Shayla LaMonica wants to help. Aggression, reactivity and anxiety are the heart of her work at Canine Community Center.

Shayla grew up in the dog world and has trained dogs professionally for over 13 years, working with thousands of dogs along the way. She volunteers at her local shelter, evaluating behavior and building training plans for the dogs who are hardest to adopt, and she partners with rescues. She has met a lot of dogs on their worst day and knows how to read them, respect them and move them forward safely.

She won’t judge you or your dog. Aggressive behavior usually grows out of fear, confusion, guarding or a lack of clear structure, and most dogs can learn better skills than the ones they’re using now.

Aggressive Dog Training, Honestly

Our goal is a dog who is calmer, more confident and more predictable, and an owner who knows exactly how to handle it. That’s what changes daily life: walks you can enjoy, guests you can welcome back inside and a home where everyone can relax.

How far a dog comes depends on its history, the type of aggression and how consistently the plan is followed at home. That’s why the consultation matters. Shayla will tell you what she sees, what’s realistic and which program fits, with no pressure either way.

Aggression doesn’t only show up in grown dogs. If your puppy already guards the food bowl or snaps when handled, it’s worth getting help early. Puppies can do board and train too, and good habits built early tend to last.

If the aggression appeared suddenly, or your dog seems sore or unwell, please book a vet check first. Pain and medical problems can cause aggressive behavior, and ruling them out helps the training work.

We work with aggressive dogs from all over the area, including North Spokane, Spokane Valley, Mead, Deer Park and Airway Heights.

Aggressive Dog Training Questions

How much does aggressive dog training cost in Spokane?

It depends on your dog, the situation and what your dog needs. Every program is customized to your goals, so two dogs with aggression can need very different amounts of work, and we don’t charge everyone the same flat rate for different situations. At your free consultation, Shayla meets your dog, builds a plan around your goals and gives you an exact quote, with no pressure to sign up.

Can an aggressive dog be cured?

Every dog is different, so we never promise a cure. Many aggressive dogs become much safer, calmer and easier to manage with behavior modification, clear structure and an owner who knows what to do. The goal is a dog you can live with confidently, plus the skills to keep it that way.

How do I discipline a dog for being aggressive?

Don’t punish growling. A growl is a warning, and when it’s punished away, some dogs skip the warning and go straight to a bite. In the moment, keep everyone safe with distance, a leash or a gate, stay calm and avoid known triggers until you have a plan. Lasting change comes from structure, consistent boundaries and rewarding calm choices, which is exactly what Shayla teaches you to do.

What is the 3-3-3 rule for dog training?

The 3-3-3 rule is a common guideline for newly adopted dogs: 3 days of decompression, 3 weeks of learning the household routine and 3 months before a dog truly feels settled. It’s a reminder to be patient. If a new rescue is showing aggression, though, don’t wait out the 3 months. Give it space and structure and get help early.

Do you offer board and train for aggressive dogs?

Yes. Longer programs, especially the 6-week program, give aggressive, reactive and fearful dogs the extra time they need. Your dog lives in Shayla’s home in Nine Mile Falls with only a few other dogs, and the program ends with a hands-on handoff where you practice every new skill yourself.

Will you come to my home in Spokane Valley or Coeur d’Alene?

Yes. In-home training is available anywhere in the Spokane area, and because Shayla holds an Idaho license, she also travels to Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls. Sessions take place in your house, your yard or the public spots where trouble tends to start.

Can my aggressive dog join a group class?

Yes, once your dog is ready. Aggressive dogs start with one-on-one work through board and train or in-home lessons. Lifetime group class access comes with both, so when Shayla sees your dog can handle other dogs nearby, you can practice around real distractions and keep the progress going.
