Reactive Dog Training, Step by Step
Free in-person consultation
We meet you and your dog, share a few training tips you can use right away and design a customized program based on your goals and your dog’s needs.
Build the foundation
Your dog learns the core skills at a distance where it can still think: focus on you, heel, place and settling. Calm choices earn praise, and your dog gets clear direction on what to do instead of barking.
Take it to the street, with you
We bring those skills to sidewalks, parks and stores, working closer to dogs, people, bikes and traffic as your dog shows it’s ready. Shayla coaches you hands-on, so you get the same calm response she does.
Lifetime group class access
Once your dog can stay calm with other dogs nearby, you get access to our group classes for the lifetime of your dog: a place and a support group to practice your skills, keep everything your dog learned and ask questions whenever they come up.
Walk Your Own Neighborhood Again
Picture walking your dog down a busy street, past barking fences and passing bikes, with your dog on a loose leash and no more bracing for the next outburst. That’s the life we work toward with every reactive dog we train.
The same skills carry over to the rest of life. A dog who can pass a neighbor’s dog calmly can also sit in a store aisle, wait on a patio or greet a visitor at the front door. Progress looks different for every dog and grows with practice at home, which is why we coach you as much as your dog.
We help reactive dogs and their people all over the region, from North Spokane and Spokane Valley to Liberty Lake, Cheney and across the state line in Post Falls.

Pick the Path That Fits Your Dog
Every reactive dog is different, so we give you options. Shayla will recommend one at your consultation based on your dog, your schedule and your goals.
Board and train
Your dog lives at Shayla’s home and trains every day at the house and out in town. Board and train gives your dog a structured daily routine with steady, consistent practice around real triggers. Once the program is complete, we give you hands-on handoff lessons so you know every skill and can keep the results going.
Private in-home lessons
One-on-one training at your home and out on the streets, trails and parking lots where the barking and lunging happen. You learn alongside your dog in your own neighborhood, anywhere in the Spokane area plus Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls.
Small group classes
Up to about 8–10 dogs working around real distractions. Lifetime access is included with board and train and in-home packages, and it’s the perfect next step once your dog can stay calm with other dogs nearby.
Your Walks Today vs. After Training
Reactivity looks different in every dog. Here’s what Spokane owners describe when they first reach out, and what we work toward together.
Life right now
- Barking and lunging at every dog you pass
- Chasing bikes, joggers and cars
- Your dog panics when strangers come close
- Your dog pulls hard on the leash
- You only walk early or after dark
- Parks, stores and patios are off the list
- Barking at the window at everyone outside
Life after reactive dog training
- Calm walks past other dogs
- Bikes and cars go by without a reaction
- A dog who stays relaxed around people
- Loose-leash walks with your dog at your side
- You walk any time, on any route
- Outings to parks, stores and patios
- A quiet house when people walk by
Reactive Dog Training on Real Streets
A reactive dog can be perfect in a quiet living room and fall apart the second a dog appears at the end of the block. So Shayla trains in the real world, on sidewalks, at parks, in stores and other busy places around Spokane, because that’s where your dog needs the skills.
We start at a distance where your dog can stay calm, teach a few simple jobs like checking in, heeling and leaving it, and reward calm choices with praise. Then we close the distance bit by bit. Clear structure shows your dog what to do instead of barking, and accountability means pulling and lunging stop paying off.
Every program includes hands-on coaching for you, because the leash runs both ways. You’ll learn how to hold it, where to stand, when to move and how to stay relaxed when your dog isn’t.

Reactivity Isn’t the Same as Aggression
Reactivity is an over-the-top response to something your dog sees, hears or smells: barking, lunging, whining, hackles up, straining toward the trigger or away from it. It’s usually driven by frustration, fear or overexcitement, and it tends to happen on leash, where your dog feels stuck and can’t create distance on its own.
Aggression is behavior meant to make something go away, by force if needed: growling, snapping or biting. Lots of reactive dogs have never bitten anyone. They simply don’t know how to handle the big feelings that come up at the end of a leash. Other dogs are closer to the line, and some are a mix of both.
Telling the difference matters because it changes the plan. Reactivity, aggression and anxiety are Shayla LaMonica’s specialty, and at your free consultation she’ll watch your dog and tell you honestly what she sees. If growling or biting is part of the picture, we’ll build the plan around safety first.
If the reactivity started suddenly, a vet check is a smart first step. Pain, trouble seeing or hearing, or other health issues can make a dog jumpy and defensive.
Reactive Dog Training Questions
How long does it take to correct dog reactivity?
It depends on your dog, how intense the reactions are, how long they’ve been going on and how much you practice. Longer board and train programs, especially the 6-week program, give reactive dogs extra time, and in-home lessons let you work on it right where it happens. Reactivity keeps improving with ongoing practice, which is why lifetime group class access is such a useful follow-up.
Can aggressiveness be trained out of a dog?
Many dogs who react or show aggression become far calmer and more predictable with behavior modification, clear structure and a confident handler. Every dog is different, so we never promise a cure, and Shayla will tell you honestly at the consultation what’s realistic for your dog.
Does the 3-3-3 rule apply to reactive dogs?
It’s a rule of thumb for adopted dogs: roughly the first 3 days feel overwhelming, by 3 weeks they’re settling into your routine, and by 3 months they feel at home. For reactive rescues, it’s a good reason to keep early walks quiet and not judge the dog too fast, while still getting help if the reactions are big.
How much is reactive dog training in Spokane?
It depends on your dog, the situation and what your dog needs. Every program is customized to your goals, so two reactive dogs can need very different amounts of work, and we don’t charge everyone the same flat rate for different situations. At your free consultation, Shayla meets your dog, builds a plan around your goals and gives you an exact quote, with no pressure to sign up.
Should I choose group classes or private lessons for a reactive dog?
Start private. A class full of dogs is often too much for a reactive dog at first. Private in-home lessons or a board and train build the skills, then group classes become a great place to practice around other dogs and real distractions, so you never lose the progress.
Why is my dog only reactive on leash?
Many dogs feel trapped on a leash. They can’t greet, and they can’t get away, so frustration or fear spills out as barking and lunging. Tension on the leash can add to it. Loose-leash skills, clear structure and a calm handler make a big difference.
Do you work with reactive dogs in Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene?
Yes. In-home training covers the whole Spokane area, and Idaho clients in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls are welcome since Shayla is licensed there. Board and train dogs come to stay at her place in Nine Mile Falls.
